How Did The Martial Arts Clothing Originate

By Marissa Velazquez

Karate is one of the most difficult arts to pursue and learn. It takes away a lot of physical strength from the body. If one has been learning it from childhood, he is bound to be stronger and fitter then the others around him. When one is seen in a martial arts clothing, it is automatically noted and subconsciously kept in mind.

Judo, karate, kick boxing and mixed martial are the most popularly known and learnt martial arts in the world. Likewise there are many more that have been originated from different parts of the world as a system of combat. They are all contributions to the wide field of martial arts that exists.

The common notion that this sport is meant for fighting purposes is false. Its inclination is towards self-defence and protecting the people from the social evils that have enveloped the planet. It also helps in keeping fit and building stamina and also raising the endurance of the person who practices it.

All in all, the teaching, learning and display of martial arts is very attractive. The costume that is worn by the people who perform this sport, is one of the most attractive parts of it. Everyone who owns an authentic and certified costume takes pride in it. Many even flaunt it among their family and friends. The traditional karate uniform is one with the white robe and white trousers. Most importantly, the belt. The belt that is worn at the waist is the mark of the level that the person has reached in the art. Different colors mark different levels.

Different costumes are used for different types of karate forms. For instance, Judo founder Kano Jigro founded the costume for judo and the other martial arts forms that come from Japan. He called it Keikogi. This name was given to the costume because Keiko means to practice and Gi means dress, it means- practice dress. The upper body potion of this costume is called the Uwagi and the lower portion is called the Shitabaki.

There were developments in the costume as per the different climatic conditions faced by Japan. Four weaves were used to make the costume so that they are able to combat the weather conditions and also to ensure that it does not cause a hindrance to the person. The first one is the single weave, it is the lightest and thinnest of the four, meant for summer. The double weave is another, which is the thickest and the heaviest.

The third type is the gold weave. This is not very thick, but neither is it thin in texture. It is used on the pleasant days when it is neither too hot not too cold. It can be categorised somewhere in between the single and double weave. The platinum weave is one that is heavier and thicker than the single weave but is lighter and thinner than the gold weave.

Now there are many available designs, colors and varieties in martial arts clothing available in the market. The traditional white ones have not lost its charm yes. It is also important that the costumes are maintained with care so that the honour is not reduced.
