The term carriage is used to refer to a wheeled vehicle, which may be drawn using various means such as human or animal labor. Horses are some of the earliest animals that were used to draw carriages. Throughout history, horses have been used for this purpose for a very long time. These were some of the earliest developments towards the invention of the modern day vehicle. The use of horses for this purpose still exists in some places. The rearmost animals is referred to as the wheeler or the wheel animal. When the animals placed in a single profile are two, the term tandem is used to refer to them. On the other hand, the term randem is used for three animals in a single profile.

In some cases, a pair or several pairs of animals are used in this activity. When this is the case, then a pole is used to attach between the wheel pair. Like in a single profile arrangement, the rearmost pair of animals here is also referred to as the wheeler pair. There are several other arrangements such as a troika, pickaxe, and unicorn.

In a unicorn, the animals are arranged in a pair, but there is a single lead animal in the arrangement. In a troika, three or four animals are arranged abreast. Lastly, in a pickaxe, there is a wheel pair with three animals used as lead animals abreast. Sometimes back, when the load was too heavy, it was possible to include an additional team of animals behind the carriage.

Some people began to station themselves on the roads to offer assistance to wagons in traversing steep landscapes. They had there own animals that were utilized for this purpose.
